Numerous Network Outages

OBJECTIVE:

Customer had experienced several network outages over the years. We were dispatched to site a few times to fix the issue and it has always been a fiber cut in the cable vault. When we would fix and test the connections, the customer had always indicated that they would look into a long term fix and we didn't need to be concerned about taking further action. After the third dispatch on the same issue, they told us to figure it out and handle with a long term fix.

Primary Issue to Resolve

Ground hogs were burrowing under the cable vault as it has a dirt floor. Once inside the cable vault, they would chew the wires causing fiber outages. The customer wanted the unwanted squatter evicted permanently. The project was fairly straight forward. The cable vault needed a floor that would keep rodents from coming in.

SOLUTION - VCT sent a cabling crew and some laborers to the site to dig the floor of the cable vault deeper and then poor a concrete floor. The basic process was to clean up the existing cabling and get it up out of the way so we can dig. Then we dug the dirt floor by hand, to make room for a gravel base and concrete. We made sure to slope the concrete floor to the center and provide a drain for any water. Once the concrete had cured, we installed new cable and finished with some general clean up. Are we a finish concrete company now as well? No! We will leave that to the professionals, But we were resourceful enough for that task.

Job well done. No more vermin.
